The 6 Coolest Cars in the Tokyo Motor Show (and Which Ones Are Coming Here)

by Chris Martin December 30, 2011 11:20 AM

It doesn't get much publicity in the Western Hemisphere, but the biannual Tokyo Motor Show is a showcase for the latest offerings by Japanese and European automakers. The 2011 version wrapped up recently, and here are the six vehicles generating the most buzz among auto makers, car lovers and auto insurance pros.

Toyota GT86 - This Toyota rear-wheel drive sports coupe has a Subaru-styled engine but will be sold as a Scion in North America sometime next year or in early 2013. Confused yet? Toyota Motor Company owns almost 20% of Subaru and manufactures Scions for the North American market. The GT86's 200hp direct-injection flat-four engine gives it some "quicks" to go with its looks.

Nissan PIVO 3 - If you've always wanted a car with forklift-like rotating rear wheels where the driver is seated in the middle instead of on the left, then the PIVO 3 is for you. Nissan execs insist that this concept car is not as implausible as it looks. But if it does come to the U.S. in the years to come, it may have to be modified to meet American auto specifications and regulations.

BMW ActiveHybrid 5 - This is one of the few German cars on display at the Tokyo Auto Show that will be found in American showrooms next spring. The ActiveHybrid 5 boasts a turbocharged 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine to go with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Bottom line: it has the potential to really shake up the luxury performance car market in the U.S.

Honda N-4 - Alas, Americans won't get to experience the N-4, which is arguably the most cubelike vehicle on the planet. This small hatchback claims chair-style seating for up to six people and is designed to evoke memories of Honda's original N cars from the 1960s. And, after all, "cubic" is the new "sleek."

Audi A1 Sportback - This model may win the "really-want-it-but-can't-have-it" award in America. The flashy five-door version of the three-door A1 will come in the buyer's choice of six gasoline and three diesel engine versions. It's agile, frisky, and classy - and available only in foreign markets. (sob!)

Suzuki Swift EV Hybrid - This one's just a concept car, so there won't be any production models in the near future. And when there are, they will likely target European consumers. The Swift EV Hybrid's range-extending electric technology operates on a smaller battery which reportedly takes only four hours to charge on a 110-volt outlet. Suzuki officials are targeting commuters who drive about 12 to 18 miles a day.

Watch This Insane Video of The Largest Car Insurance Claim Ever Filed

by admin December 29, 2011 09:09 AM

Once in a while, you hear about a multi-million dollar insurance claim being filed when something expensive has been damaged or lost. Like when a seaside mansion is destroyed by a hurricane. Or when valuable jewelry has been stolen from a retailer. Or when rare paintings were damaged by a museum fire. But a $2 million auto insurance claim? That's unheard of … right?

Well, it's happening right now in Texas -- and it could just be the biggest claim of its kind in history.

This is what a 2006
Bugatti Veyron looks like.

A few years ago, Andy House purchased a 2006 Bugatti Veyron, one of the world's most expensive automobiles, for $1.05 million. House subsequently purchased an insurance policy from Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company (PHLY) for $2.2 million. (It is not unusual for rare collectable vehicles to be insured at "market value" above the owner's purchase price.) Then, in November 2009, House managed to drive the Veyron into a swamp outside Galveston, Texas, and proceeded to file a claim. House claims that he swerved to avoid a pelican and accidentally crashed the car.

Naturally, PHLY is skeptical about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The company is disputing the claim, arguing that House drove the Veyron into the swamp intentionally. As proof, it cites the lack of skid marks on the roadway and the fact that House left the ignition running while the car was submerged (which ruined the engine after it ingested water). PHLY also maintains that House exceeded the mileage restrictions on the exotic car's policy, which voided the coverage.

Astoundingly, the incident was captured on video by a passerby. Watch and decide for yourself who is correct. (Caution: salty language)

The disagreement has made its way into the court system. PHLY filed a motion for summary judgment, which is a request that the issue be ruled upon by a judge before formal trial proceedings get underway. Such a motion is usually filed when one side believes that the case has no merit or is clearly covered by existing laws. However, a U.S. District Court judge refused to grant the motion, saying that there were “quizzical factual circumstances” which needed to be decided by a jury.

So the case appears to be headed to trial. It is entirely possible that the two sides could reach a settlement prior to the start of (or even during) court proceedings. But if that doesn't happen, a handful of ordinary citizens will have to figure out whether or not an insurance company will make history by shelling out over $2 million -- for a car.
