The 10 Best Websites for Buying and Selling Used Cars

by Chris Martin October 16, 2012 03:04 PM

Remember the days when people who wanted to sell their car privately had to buy a newspaper listing, hang up a flyer on a bulletin board or telephone pole, or park the vehicle in an abandoned parking lot with a For Sale sign? The only thing tougher than selling a used car back then was buying one.

But in the 21st century, the Internet has fundamentally changed the way people buy and sell used vehicles in America. And there is no shortage of sites that provide these services. Here are the 10 best ones out there today.

  1. Auto Trader - Sure, it gives you a great selection of used vehicles to choose from. But it also provides video reviews, credit options, and special offers that you may not find anywhere else.
  1. CarsDirect - This user-friendly site lets you search for a used car by price and body segment, as well as by using traditional criteria. In addition, it has impressive research tools to help you put an accurate value on the vehicle you want to sell.
  1. Mojo Motors - The unique aspect to this site is its ability to let you "follow" used cars that you like and receive alerts when their prices change. Also, it doesn't display paid car ads, so you know that the information you're getting is unbiased.
  1. Cars.com - The owner of this site is a conglomerate of newspaper publications and organizations. But what consumers like is its easy-to-use search functions to help them select the precise used car they're looking for.
  1. Car Soup - It may be the loud, irreverent kid in the online used car market, but it offers attractive features like video test drives as well as information on used car insurance. Plus, the site also lists boats, campers, RVs, and other types of used vehicles.
  1. AutoBytel - It was one of the pioneers in Internet used car sales, and it's still going strong today. In addition to a large selection of listings, it offers a "guaranteed purchase price" to people wanting to sell their used vehicles via the site.
  1. eBay Motors - This is probably the largest used car auction site in the world, and it contains the most diverse collection of private ads as well. This may be the best choice not only for sellers, but also for buyers who are exploring both local and national listings.
  1. Kelley Blue Book - As the nation's most trusted name in used car valuation, KBB's website naturally does a great job of educating users about what they should expect to pay/receive for a used vehicle. But they also have a useful interface for helping buyers find used vehicles in their area.
  1. Fast Auto Sales - This site is a favorite among thrifty used car sellers because it's free to post a listing, and the ad will run until the vehicle is sold. As a result, people who visit the site in search of a used car have lots of choices to pick from.
  1. Yahoo! Autos - Yes, the site does a lot of different things, but it provides a pretty good portal for used cars buyers and sellers. Also, its network of TrueCar dealers touts "no-haggle, no-hassle guaranteed savings" for its buyers.

SafeAuto Facebook Fans Win Big at the “VIP at the UFC” Contest in Minneapolis

by Jason Parks October 9, 2012 10:30 AM

You won’t meet two bigger UFC® fans than Michael Schweigert Hogart and Frank Horak. While attending broadcasting school together, the two hosted their own MMA radio show. With such a familiarity with the growing sport of mixed martial arts, the two couldn’t believe what they were about to experience courtesy of SafeAuto Insurance.

The diehard fans won airfare, hotel, tickets to the UFC® on FX bout in Minneapolis, plus a private meet and greet with SafeAuto Fight Team member Travis ‘Hapa’ Browne at the weigh-ins. “Not only did we get to meet one of our favorite fighters in Browne, we also got to meet Randy Couture and my dream girl, women’s Strikeforce champion Ronda Rousey,” stated an ecstatic Schweigert.

As an official sponsor of the UFC®, the state minimum auto insurance company will run several contests on their Facebook page to reward the rapid UFC® fan base. “Even though ‘Hapa’ couldn’t pull of the win, overall this trip was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Schweigert. “I’ve been bragging to all of my friends non stop about the access we got this weekend!”

SafeAuto tries to constantly stay engaged with their social media following. The “VIP at the UFC” Facebook contest was another example how they were able to excite their online following. “It really speaks volumes about SafeAuto that they would reward fans like this, it’s just amazing!” stated Schweigert.

The 5 Best Insurance Directories On the Web

by Dan Seitz July 23, 2012 09:13 AM

Finding insurance can be difficult, no matter what kind you're looking for – from auto insurance to life insurance. That's where registries come in; they can help you find the best insurance company and agent, no matter what you're looking for. Here are five of our favorites.

Insurance States - http://www.insurancestates.com

Why We Love It: What makes this site unique is the state breakdown: you just click on your state on the front page of the site and it takes you to a comprehensive, alphabetical list of insurance agencies in that state. There's no muss, no ads that sit between you and the agent you need, and no ridiculous graphics that demand your attention or force you to scroll through complicated menus. You just choose the state you live in and you immediately get a list of agencies with a brief description of what they do, their website, and the location of their central office. For insurance hunters in a rush or those looking for a quick list of companies to call, it's perfect, and we often recommend it to customers in a big hurry.

LookInsurance - http://www.lookinsurancesite.com

Why We Love It: If you want to look by state with LookInsurance, that's a simple process right on the homepage. But equally as quick is to use the convenient breakout they have located right below their state-by-state listings. If you need a specific state or a specific category, this will serve as a speedy reference tool. We find it's especially useful for folks who can't seem to find an agent in their area.

Insurance Agent Reference - http://www.insuranceagentreference.com

Why We Love It: If you want your search to be a little more detailed, but still want it to be quick, Insurance Agent Reference is ideal. You select your state, then your town, and it gives you a detailed list of agencies, their websites and contact information, and will even order the agencies by the most popular, the most convenient location, and, of course, by alphabetical order. It's a quick sort useful for those on the go.

Directory Insurance - http://www.directoryinsurance.com

Why We Love It: For people who want to take their time and look at all their options, Directory Insurance offers the best and most detailed search we've found. On the homepage of the site alone, the most popular categories are broken out in a simple-to-use list across all types of insurance. As you dig in, it offers you lots of options to sort your search. Or, if you know exactly what you're looking for, you can use their quick and effective search bar right on the homepage. It's one of the most comprehensive and easy to use databases we've found.

Internet Insurance Directory - http://www.insdir.com

Why We Love It: For those who really want a step-by-step process that's simple to follow, this is ideal. Go by state, then by type, and it will bring you directly to a list of insurers broken out by what services they offer. We find this site is especially easy to use for older customers and those who may be new to or uncomfortable with the Internet.
