Three multi-truck accidents (and one red flag) didn't stop SafeAuto Racing member Johnny Sauter from crossing the finish line at the NextEra Energy Resources 250 in Daytona. Despite extensive damage to his No. 13 SafeAuto truck, Sauter was able to rally back in the top 20 at the checkers to finish seventeenth behind winner Michael Waltrip.
Not only was Daytona the first race of the 2011 season for Sauter, it was also the first time he got behind the wheel of the No.13 SafeAuto Insurance truck. Sauter was delighted to finish the crash-filled race in the top twenty. "We did have a bad fast truck, the setup was great, and I was glad to wheel it home for SafeAuto on their first race."
The veteran racer is looking to improve upon his Daytona finish and realizes that there is a lot of racing left. "It's like I told my guys - this is one race out of 25. We've got to pick up, dust off, and get going to Phoenix. That's the way Daytona is - there is a lot of 'who is left standing' at the end of the race, and we were left standing in the top 20. Many of the major contenders this year didn't even get to finish due to all the wrecks."
The improvement of Sauter’s crew during the offseason paid dividends during the chaotic, crash-filled race in Daytona. Sauter realizes the importance of his team members. "The guys on the crew worked their hearts out in the offseason on our truck, and I've got to thank my guys. They rallied. That's dedication and communication by my guys, and I'm looking forward to using that advantage in more races this year to get us back in Victory Lane."
Note: At one point during the race, Sauter ran as high as sixth place.
