INSURANCE FOR DRIVERS WITH DUIS

Find out how much you can save:

WHAT IS A DUI?

A DUI (driving under the influence) offense usually means that an individual was operating a motorized vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or other substances. A DUI can also be known as a DWI (driving while intoxicated), OWI (operating while intoxicated) or OMVI (operating a motor vehicle impaired) depending on the state you live in.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF DRUNK DRIVING?

Besides being marked as a high-risk driver, you may face fines, loss of wages, jail time, DUI class requirements, injuries to yourself and others and even more unintended repercussions if you get behind the wheel while you are impaired..

If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol or substance addiction, please seek help from a qualified professional and/or organization such as  SAMHSA.

DOES A DUI AFFECT INSURANCE RATES?

A DUI is considered a strong indicator of risk in a driver and in most cases your rates will increase. If your auto insurance company doesn't provide high-risk coverage, that company may end your coverage with them.

HOW LONG WILL A DUI STAY ON YOUR DRIVING RECORD?

A DUI driving offense may stay on your record for an average of 5 years, depending on the state.

AM I STILL COVERED IF I'M IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE?

You may still be covered up to the limits of your policy for any accident.

WHAT IS AN IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE?

An ignition interlock device is installed on your vehicle and it measures the driver’s BAC (blood-alcohol content). If the driver’s BAC is over the state’s legal limit or court-ordered limit, the vehicle won’t start. These devices are court-ordered.

WHAT IS AN SR-22?

An SR-22 is a document that validates you carry the minimum liability coverage required by your state, which is issued by your insurance company. It is usually a court-ordered document, which may be required after a DUI conviction. To learn more, visit our SR-22 page.
