WHAT IS AN SR-22?
An SR-22 is a form that is filed with your state to show you have the minimum coverages of car insurance required by law. An SR-22 isn’t a type of insurance, but a document provided by your insurance company. It is also known as a “Certificate of Financial Responsibility.”
HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO GET SR-22 CAR INSURANCE?
You would know if you need to file an SR-22 because the state would notify you. Not every driver is required to file an SR-22. Although each state has its own requirements, typically an SR-22 is required if you’ve been caught driving without valid car insurance or driving with an invalid driver’s license.
Other examples of circumstances that frequently require drivers to get an SR-22 include the following:
DUI, DWI or any serious moving violation
At-fault accidents while driving without insurance
Repeat traffic offenses or getting too many tickets in a short period of time
To reinstate a suspended or revoked license
HOW LONG IS AN SR-22 VALID?
Each state has its own requirements for the length of time that an SR-22 must be in place. As long as you pay the required premium and to keep your policy active, the SR-22 will remain in effect until the requirements for your state have been met. The average length of time required to have an SR-22 is 3 years.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY POLICY IS CANCELLED?
If your policy is cancelled while you are still required to carry an SR-22, your insurer is required to notify state authorities, which may result in a suspension of your driving privileges. Your insurance company will provide the state with advance notice before cancelling your coverage. If your policy is cancelled, your insurer will file an SR-26 with the state, indicating that your policy is no longer in effect.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN SR-22 AND AN FR-44?
In the states of Florida and Virginia, an FR-44 is a “Certificate of Financial Responsibility”. It is similar to an SR-22, but an FR-44 usually requires higher liability limits.
ARE THERE ANY FEES FOR FILING AN SR-22?
Most states require a small filing fee when an SR-22 is first filed. There is usually no fee to renew an SR-22 unless you have allowed your policy to lapse. An SR-22 is filed for a specific driver, so if there are additional drivers on your policy who require an SR-22, you will need an SR-22 for each driver.
CAN I GET AN SR-22 IF I DON’T OWN A CAR?
Yes. If you require an SR-22 but don’t own a vehicle, SafeAuto can write a Non-Owner policy and add the SR-22 filing to that. This will protect you if you’re found at-fault in an accident while driving a vehicle not owned by you. A non-owners policy is not available on our website, but our licensed agents can assist you.
