What is homeowners insurance?

Your house is so much more than your largest investment, it’s your home. Homeowners insurance can help you protect your home’s structure, your belongings inside, and certainliability suits that may be brought against you. No home is the same so your homeowners policy shouldn’t be either.

Hippo believes homeowners deserve better and more modern home insurance, which is why they work with exclusive top-rated partners to ensure you are protected. Hippo can help you save up to 25% on premiums by automating the process and modernizing your coverage.* If a disaster should strike, you will be met with the most reliable, caring, and swift response possible from humans, not robots, who care a lot. And if that's not enough, getting a quote from Hippo is fast. Really fast. Most customers get a quote in 60 seconds or less! A few more steps and your policy can be purchased.

Your out-of-pocket costs

Your deductible, as it is stated in your policy, is the amount you will owe if your home is damaged and you file a claim. For example, if your deductible is $500 and lightning strikes your house, causing $10,000 in damage, you will pay your $500 deductible before your insurance company pays the remaining $9,500

*Estimated premium savings based on state rate comparisons of Hippo's prices as compared to average industry prices.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Belongings?

Personal property coverage covers your stuff if it is damaged during non-everyday events such as a fire or stolen during a robbery. This includes things like your laptop or décor stolen from your property. Commonly covered belongings are:

Appliances

Furniture

Toys/Games

There are limits per item with this type of protection that is calculated as a percentage of your total personal property coverage. If you have particularly expensive items, these may not be completely covered by your insurance unless you specifically add them to your policy (which usually comes with a fee). For example, if you have $150,000 in personal property coverage and the limit for any single item is 10%, you are covered up to $15,000 per item. If your $20,000 painting is destroyed, you would only receive a payment of $15,000, minus your deductible. If you have an expensive item, call your insurance company to add that item to your policy in a process called scheduling an item or adding a rider.

What is covered by homeowners insurance?

Though it varies state to state, there are standard coverages that most states offer:

Your house and Property

Your house: Dwelling coverage may include anything that is attached to your house, such as a garage, chimney, roof, cabinets, flooring, etc. Besides your house other structures that may be covered by your policy include those not attached to your house, such as detached garages, sheds, fences, driveways, etc.

Temporary Living Expenses

If your home is uninhabitable due to a covered loss, loss of use coverage may pay for a hotel/rent expenses as well as food while you are displaced.

Lawsuits

Personal liability coverage may cover you in the event someone is injured on your property by you or if you or your family members on your policy damage another’s property. If you are sued, this coverage may pay for a lawyer and court fees. An example would be if a guest to your home trips on a rug because it was not properly secured and breaks his leg, personal liability coverage could pay for his injury.

Injuries on Your Property

This coverage may pay medical expenses and workers comp (in select states) in the event someone is injured on your property.
